About Me
I'm an experimental physicist. For the past two decades, I've designed, built, and operated high-power laser systems - from terawatt to petawatt scale - and I now lead research that puts advanced photonics to work in medicine and sensing.
At the University of Texas at Austin, I was the lead laser scientist on the Texas Petawatt, which was one of the most powerful lasers in the United States. I led the upgrade that doubled the system's repetition rate, delivered 167 shots over 21 days during our first post-upgrade campaign, and managed the design of all nine front-end systems for the proposed T-STAR multi-petawatt facility, a joint effort between the Department of Energy (LaserNetUS), Focused Energy, and UT Austin.
I now serve as Research Scientist at UT Austin, leading projects that translate advanced photonics into practical applications: isotope separation for medical tracers, quantum-limited acoustic detection for biomedical sensing, and nanofabrication for enhanced ionization and sensing - work supported by the University of Copenhagen and Novo Nordisk.
My research background spans 20+ years of hands-on laser science: from designing and building an OPCPA amplifier for the THOR terawatt system and achieving sub-30 fs pulses, to leading experiments on gas cluster explosion dynamics with XUV pulses, warm dense matter studies on the Texas Petawatt, and high harmonic generation. I've worked at SLAC's Linac Coherent Light Source and published in Physical Review Letters, Physics of Plasmas, and AIP Advances.
I'm the founder and CEO of Photonics Dynamics, where we develop advanced photonics systems for scientific, industrial, and defense applications. I write about laser science at every level - from a technical textbook on practical OPCPA (under review with Springer) to popular science writing that makes extreme light accessible to general audiences.
